5 Skin Types Defined & Best Products for Each

Normal Skin

Generally, normal skin doesn’t have any distinctive qualities. It’s balanced—neither oily nor dry, doesn’t show signs of sensitivity, has small to medium-sized pores, and has an even skin tone and clear complexion. It’s the skin most of us are shooting for; but keep in mind, normal skin does not mean flawless or perfect. Everyone gets some irritation, blemishes, and unevenness now and then depending on hormones, the environment, and other factors.

Dry Skin

Dry skin feels tight and less elastic than “normal” skin. Without enough moisture, lines are more visible, and skin may feel a bit rough or flaky. Dry skin is prone to redness, and it sometimes looks dull due to lack of moisture.

Most people face bouts of dry skin throughout the winter months. Those who live in arid regions with low humidity may struggle with dry skin (a humidifier may help with that). Unfortunately, aging and hormones often cause dry skin as do some cosmetics, synthetic cleansers, and medications.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is on the other end of the spectrum. You may battle with large pores that clog easily. Oily skin tends to look shiny, and you may deal with acne and blemishes. However, those with oily skin don’t struggle as much with wrinkles!

Combination Skin

Combination skin is both oily and dry. You may have oily skin around your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) but have dry skin on your temples and cheeks. Or, your skin may fluctuate between dry and oily with your menstrual cycle.

Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin may find that they break out easily or react to certain products. Seasonal weather changes and stress may increase sensitivity. You may experience redness, splotchy skin, itchy or burning skin, or dryness. Rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema fall under the sensitive skin category.
